About this Presentation

Critical chain project management (CCPM) assumes that the most pernicious form of local optimization in projects is the local safeties inside every task's duration. Sounds quite plausible, but is not true! Our experience in more than 300 enterprise level implementations, in projects ranging from the complex (building a power plant) to the simple (developing a website), indicates that: 1. The extra time in task durations mostly comes from waiting time rather than task time variability. It inflates task durations by a factor of 2 to 10. 2. Trying to keep resources busy instead of projects flowing is the real culprit. 3. Even when task level safeties were to be true, it would be futile to attack them because that would require an en masse change in behaviors. Sanjeev Gupta and Baltazar Martinez will demonstrate that the real change needed is from keeping resources busy to focus and finish. They will also present a new project data model that achieves focus and finish within and across projects. Sanjeev and Baltazar will use case studies as well as the logic of flow to make their point. (If you are a fan of TOC thinking processes, you might be disappointed. No attempts will be made to cloud the issue by invoking core conflicts.) Video length: . PDF: slides.

What Will You Learn

To help you get the most value from this session, we’ve highlighted a few key points. These takeaways capture the main ideas and practical insights from the presentation, making it easier for you to review, reflect, and apply what you’ve learned.

Plane
The speaker suggests that the current changes and innovations in the world, particularly in supply chains, present an opportune time for new paradigm-breaking technology solutions to establish themselves.
The speaker argues that the benefits of Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) are not derived from buffers or changing behaviors, but from a focus and finish approach.
The speaker presents the concept of 'Focus and Finish Workflows' as a more effective method for project management, which involves structuring work into tasks that need to be completed together for a variety of reasons.

Instructor(s)

Sanjeev Gupta

Sanjeev Gupta Bio Most recently, Sanjeev Gupta was the CEO of Vulcan Mozambique, Africa’s largest coal mine. Within the first 90 days, he led impressive improvements in profitability, mining production, and logistics, setting the mine on a path to sustained success. Sanjeev’s journey in turnarounds began early in his career at Xerox, a Fortune 100 company, where, as a junior manager, he turned around its worst-performing factory and made it the best-performing one. This initial success led him to found Throughput Technologies, where his team provided software based on the Theory of Constraints for factories. He worked with companies ranging from $5 million to $5 billion, improving throughput by 20% to 50% and reducing lead times by over 50%. He later founded Realization Technologies, offering similar software and consulting services for project-based organizations. There, he achieved comparable throughput improvements, with lead time reductions varying between 25% to 75%. His clients included organizations such as ABB, BHP Billiton, Boeing, L & T, Medtronic, Siemens, and the U.S. Armed Forces (Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, and Navy). Sanjeev is a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, Virginia Tech, and Carnegie Mellon University.
