About this Presentation

Today’s business environment, especially in retail, is being impacted by 3 trends that seem to be irreversible: the increase in product portfolios, the shortening of product life cycles and the reduction of customer tolerance times. This increase in variety/assortment coupled with the reduction of the life cycle and customer tolerance times imposes a huge challenge in supply chain management. Demand is spreading over a larger number of items which leads to higher variability. The solution for this challenge contemplates a process to flag the non-reasonable demand for every single SKU and assess the level of stock and buffer status of the regular provider. It also includes a alternative modelling in which the customer's request can be met by both the make-to-availability (MTA) stock or a specific make-to-order (MTO) order. Moreover, it is necessary, in some cases, to make some adjustments in the standard dynamic buffer management (DBM) policies to stabilize the environment. We have developed a process and implemented it in 2 companies: A dairy company and wholesale and retail company that operates in the Brazilian maintenance, repair and operations (MRO). Based on this experience we believe that the same solution can be applied to other business environments that experience this same kind of problem. Along with these processes we developed new entities for the S&T tree to capture the logic of the solution and implementation.
